LET HER GROW BEFORE SHE WEDS
Today, Sunday, October 11, 2026, the world observes the International Day of the Girl Child, and this year’s theme is: “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights!”
In Nigeria, we talk a lot about marriage, we celebrate it, pray for it and pressure our daughters into it. But we must ask ourselves a question: When does marriage stop being a blessing and start becoming a burden? The answer is simple: when the bride is still a child.
A girl of 13, 14 or 15 is not ready to be a wife, she is not ready to run a home when she should be in a classroom. Child marriage is childhood interrupted, education terminated and dreams cut short.
Why does it persist? Poverty, where a daughter is seen as an economic burden. Harmful traditions that place greater value on a girl’s bride price than her education. Insecurity, where parents believe early marriage will protect her, and ignorance, where the long-term consequences are not understood.
The truth is, marrying off a daughter early does not solve poverty, it can transfer its consequences to the next generation. A child bride is more likely to leave school, face health risks associated with early pregnancy, experience domestic violence and raise children in economic hardship. It becomes a cycle that weakens families instead of building them.
To invest in girls’ rights is to invest in better marriages and stronger relationships tomorrow.
A girl who finishes her education and understands her rights becomes better equipped to make informed decisions about marriage, motherhood and her future.
So what must we do?
For parents, invest your bride-price expectations into her school fees. Her education can bring greater honour than any early marriage.
For traditional and religious leaders, use your influence to make it clear that no tradition is worth the tears of a child.
For government, we need more than laws. We need enforcement, education and economic support for vulnerable families.
For young men, be a protector, not a predator. A man does not marry a child.
This International Day of the Girl Child, let us make a pledge, let the only thing we give our girls early be opportunity, not a husband. Because when we end child marriage, we do not just protect a girl; we protect the woman, wife, mother and leader she can become.
A girl allowed to grow is a nation allowed to thrive!
