CAN SEX SAVE MARRIAGE?

CAN SEX SAVE MARRIAGE?

Sex cannot save marriage if there is betrayal, deep resentment, emotional neglect or constant conflict between a couple. The truth is, you cannot carry a troubled marriage into the bedroom and expect sex to do the work that honesty, forgiveness and communication have refused to do.

Sex can protect a marriage, this is where many couples often miss the point. Marriage can become so consumed by everyday life that the couple gradually disappears beneath the responsibilities. There are children to raise, bills to pay, careers to manage, relatives to attend to and a home to run. Eventually, husband and wife may become excellent partners in running a household while becoming strangers in the bedroom: that distance matters!

Sexual intimacy is not merely about intercourse, it’s also about touch, affection, desire and the reassurance of knowing that your spouse still sees you as a man or woman, not simply as the person who pays the bills, cooks the meals or looks after the children.

There is something powerful about being wanted by the person you have chosen to share your life with as every marriage has seasons. Pregnancy, childbirth, exhaustion, stress, illness, ageing, menopause and medication can all affect desire. Sometimes couples simply go through periods when sex is less frequent, that, by itself, does not mean the marriage is failing.

It creates a concern when the distance becomes normal and neither partner cares enough to address it.

Talk about it, if you miss your lover say so. If something has changed, ask about it, also if intercourse has become painful, boring or emotionally disconnected, find out why. And if there is resentment in the bedroom, deal with the issue rather than expecting sex to cover it up.

Lovemaking should never be used as punishment, payment or proof of obedience. A wife does not owe her husband sex because he provides for the family, just as a husband does not owe his wife sex because she takes care of the home.

Good sex requires mutual desire, consideration and consent. Especially as sex will not rescue a marriage that two people have abandoned.

When love, friendship and respect are still present, sexual intimacy can help preserve the closeness that keeps a couple from becoming mere housemates.

Marriage needs many things to survive, love making is not the whole foundation and it is certainly not a minor detail either!
